On August 13th, 1961, the East Berlin government constructed an almost 12 foot wall to separate itself from West Berlin. There was an immediate outcry. Families were separated, jobs were lost, people were homeless and there was total chaos. The Soviet Sector took away a Berliners freedom. Additionally, the Berlin Wall became a centerpiece of the Cold War. The Cold War in Berlin began immediately after World War II, with Berlin divided into Four Sectors. As mentioned in the back-story, the Berlin Blockade and the Berlin Airlift, were two of the earliest events of Berlin's involvement during the Cold War. This was followed by the founding of the German Democratic Republic in 1949. After the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate closed the day after. This completely separated the Four Sectors, leaving those on the East side of the wall captive and essentially imprisoning them until 28 years later.
